This experimental wheat farm gives a sense of the magnitudes of ecosystem services, on which human life depends, which are invisibilized in conventional economic accounting. Today at 10 p.m. wheat costs 0.4€/kg on European commodity markets. Grown in a closed environment, with inputs like sun, wind, rain and soil substituted artificially, our real-cost-price per kg of wheat ranges from 200 to 400 €, up to 987 times higher than market rates. This absurdly high cost of artificial cultivation offers a sense of the immense value provided to humanity at almost no cost in healthy ecosystems, and the extent of what is at stake with the ecosystem breakdowns underway.
